Representative Carol Alvarado is a native Houstonian first elected to represent HD-145 in 2008. She previously served on the Houston City Council from 2002 to 2007. She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Select Committee on Transparency in State Agency Operations and as Vice-Chair of the House Committee on Urban Affairs. Alvarado is also on the Special Purpose Districts and Calendars committees. She has previously served on the House Redistricting, Public Health and Resource Management committees.
As a council member she worked to eliminate nuisance bars in neighborhoods, initiate a smoking ban in restaurants and bars, install cameras at rail crossings, and helped establish the Houston Parking Commission. She has also promoted the expansion of the Port of Houston and initiated downtown revitalization has projects.
Alvarado is a graduate of the University of Houston where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and her M.B.A. She is a member of Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas, the National Association of Latino Elected Officials, the Texas Municipal League, Women Professionals in Government, Hispanic Elected Officials, the National Organization for Women, the UH Alumni Association, the Texas Democratic Party and the League of Women Voters.
