In November 2012, Mary E. González was elected State Representative for House District 75- an area that includes east El Paso County, parts of the city of El Paso and the towns of Socorro, Clint, Fabens, and Tornillo. Mary was born and raised in Clint, Texas attending public schools and graduating from Clint High School. Her local roots include serving as 4-H Club President to founding the Far East El Paso County Partnership to empower young leaders in colonias.
Mary received her Bachelor Degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her Master’s Degree from St. Edward’s University. Currently, she is pursuing her Doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction- Cultural Studies in Education at the University of Texas at Austin.
Previously, she has worked at the National Hispanic Institute, the University of Texas at Austin, and was the Assistant Dean for Student Multicultural Affairs at Southwestern University. Mary has also worked as a visiting instructor at Southwestern University, and a Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Texas at Austin.
Community Engagement is at the heart of her activism. As National President for the Latina-based, service sorority Kappa Delta Chi she gives direction and leadership toward the achievement of the Sorority’s mission, vision, strategy and annual goals. Mary is also Co-Chair of the Board of Directors for Allgo, Texas’ state-wide Queer People of Color organization and is currently leading their board development and organization assessment efforts.
Mary has dedicated her life to promoting social change through her community engagement, professional experiences and academic background. She has been recognized by mylatinovoice.com as the “Hot 25 under 25″ most influential young Latinos in the country and in Latino Leaders Magazine for her leadership in education. And most recently, Mary was recognized as one of ten “Next Generation Latinas” by Latina Magazine and one of the 10 newly-elected politicians to watch in the nation by NBC Latino.
